Are you worried about your heating system? The autumn came and went, and you just kept putting off that call to have it checked—or maybe the whole thing slipped your mind completely. There’s no need to worry. You can have your heater checked now and start 2022 off on the right foot.
Of course, it never hurts to have a system check-up. But there are some sure signs that your system is in need right now. Here is our New Year’s list of heating issues that need to be taken care of as quickly as possible:
Noise
All heating systems make some noise as part of their normal operation. But there are other noises—clanging, banging, and scratching—that are warning flags that the system may be in trouble. Any noise that seems out of place might be a sign that a system breakdown is right around the corner.
Dust and Poor Air Quality
If you find that you are sneezing and/or coughing on a regular basis, that can be a sign that the heating system isn’t working correctly. It may be releasing dust and other allergens into your home. Make sure that your system has a clean filter, but it also doesn’t hurt to have someone come and look to make certain it is not a more destructive issue.
Lack of Heat
Have you noticed that some or all your home doesn’t seem to get warm no matter how long you run your system? Or worse cold air is blasting through the vents. Check the circuit breaker to make sure the system is receiving power. But if that’s not it, get a professional can come and repair quickly so that you can get back to enjoying some winter warmth.
“Short cycles”
Short cycle is phrase used when the heating system will turn on, run briefly, then shut itself off again. This cycle can be repeated. It’s like a car that refuses to turn over. Short cycling means that there is a problem with the heat exchange and is something that technician can solve for you. The flip side of short cycling is the occasion when your system refuses to turn off. This can be problematic for several different reasons and the best solution is a repair appointment.
Pilot light Color
If you use a gas-powered furnace, the pilot light should always burn blue. Go look. If that flame is any other color—red, orange, yellow—there is something in the system that shouldn’t be there. It could be as simple as rust or worse—harmful compounds that have made their way into your system. The best way to prevent problems down the line is to have the compounds removed by a professional. We’re a team that can do this for you.
